Dachau Concentration Camp Liberated by US Troops (1945)
Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp and served as a model for others that followed. Over 200,000 prisoners from more than 30 countries were housed there. Beginning in 1941, the Nazis used Dachau for extermination purposes, and camp records list 30,000 persons killed there. Thousands more died due to poor conditions, including a typhus epidemic.
